Carbarn United States sells Japanese used cars direct to American buyers. Cars in Carbarn's own stock are bought at auction in Japan, owned by Carbarn and inspected before they are listed; cars from the live Japan auctions are bought for you when your bid wins. A car at least 25 years old, counted from the month and year it was built, does not have to meet current US safety standards. Emissions are a separate federal rule: a car more than 21 years old is exempt if it keeps its original engine, or an identical one. No inspection is needed in Japan before the car ships, and Carbarn checks the build date on every listing before it goes on the site, so every car here is old enough on the day it lands.
Cars sail by RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) ship, driven on in Japan and driven off at the port nearest you: Los Angeles/Long Beach and Tacoma on the West Coast, Houston on the Gulf, and Jacksonville or Baltimore on the East Coast. The crossing takes 14 to 45 days depending on the port. When the car arrives, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) collects the import duty, 12.5% of the car's price for a passenger car, plus the small merchandise processing and harbor maintenance fees. There is no federal VAT or sales tax at the border; your state charges its own sales tax when you title and register the car, and titling rules differ from state to state.
The stock is what American buyers wait 25 years for: Nissan Skyline GT-R and Silvia, Toyota Supra, Chaser and Land Cruiser, Honda Civic Type R and Integra Type R, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Delica, Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Mazda RX-7, and Toyota Hiace and Alphard vans. Every listing carries photographs, the auction sheet and grade, the Carbarn inspection comments and the full inspection report, so you can see the car's history and condition before you decide, and the landed cost on each listing shows the car, shipping and duty together before you order.
